Second Annual 5 K "Run for the San Diego River"
Trail Run/Walk

May 17, 2008

Lakeside’s River Park is gearing up for the 2nd Annual 5K Trail Run / Walk for the San Diego River. It will be held on Saturday, May 17, 2008 at 8:00am in conjunction with San Diego River Days. Last year’s race was a huge success and walkers and runners have been asking about this event all year.

The race starts and finishes at Mapleview and Channel and participants can expect a beautiful off-street course that travels through the River Park, around the ponds, west of the River Park and onto Lakeside Land, and back on the long stretch of the trail next to Willowbrook Golf Course. Runners and walkers will be able to see and appreciate the improvements made along the trail since the last race. Lodge pole fencing lines the northern side of the trail, an overlook has been built on the west pond, and more newly planted dedicated oaks and sycamores line the trail.

This trail run/walk is geared for all ages to enjoy. Last year we had walkers as young as 88 and as old as 3; it was fun for everyone. Awards will be given to the top 3 finishers in each age group. Dogs on leashes are also allowed to walk the trail (just remember to bring the poo bag along).

There’s always a huge need for assistance before, during and after an event. Volunteers are a key element to the success of an event and the upcoming 5K is no different. We are in need of volunteers to help with race preparations such as posting signs in the community, T-shirt folding, packet and bib assembly, flyer distribution, packet pick up, set up, event photography, race registration, food & water station monitors, course marshals, split timers, final timers, parking and clean up. If you are interested and willing to help make this 2nd Annual 5K a success, please contact Cindy Collins in our office at 619/443-4770 to make arrangements.

The 5K is one of the River Park’s annual fund raisers. Again, its success is the result of support and donations from businesses and community members. If your business wants to get involved or if you’re interested in making a donation, please contact Michele Sawaya at 619/443-4770 for more information about sponsorship levels and benefits.

Please sign up soon to participate in a great event. Join us for a crisp morning run or walk and don’t forget your camera for scenic photo opportunities. Bring your family, friends, neighbors, and team up with co-workers, tell everyone you know about the River Park and that participating in the walk will help fund its progress.

Registration fees are $20 per person, and $25 after May 9. Youth (under 18 years) groups of 10 or more may register for the race for a reduced fee: $15 per person before May 9, and $20 after May 9. Please submit all the signed race registration forms together to receive the special rate.
